I’ve always loved wine. Since the college days of Carlo Rossi jugs and Tour de Franzia teams to adulthood, when opening a nice bottle of red became one of life’s many simple pleasures. Recently, though, I’ve started to look at that nightly ritual a little differently. In fact, I’ve replaced my nightly glass of wine with CBD instead.
What is CBD?
CBD is a compound that occurs naturally in the cannabis plant. While it appears right alongside THC, it is non-psychoactive, meaning it won’t get you “high.” Instead, CBD goes to work in the body’s endocannabinoid system. That system governs our sleep patterns, influences our moods, and controls our appetite, among other things. While our bodies already produce native cannabinoids, ingesting CBD is thought to trigger a more significant cannabinoid release, influencing everything from mood to sleep.
How CBD Works in the Body
When you ingest CBD, it triggers the body to release cannabinoids. It also has a pretty profound impact on the nervous system. Specifically, CBD is thought to intercept the transmission of pain signals throughout the body. It also promotes the release of hormones and enzymes that boost cognitive function, make digestion more effective, and more.
While CBD sounds all new-agey, it’s an ancient substance, and people have been using it for several thousand years.
CBD and Self-Care
If you’re like me, you quite like a glass of wine or a cold beer at night. It’s a great way to unwind after a long day of work, and many of us have become dependent on this little ritual to chill out and get to sleep.
And if you’re like me, you might notice that it’s that last part that becomes an issue: dependency.
While wine, in moderation, has proven to have a multitude of health benefits, taking anything in excess becomes an issue pretty quickly. Likewise, becoming dependent on something is an issue. Even worse, even slightly too much booze has the opposite effect you want: instead of helping you relax and get to sleep, it actually interrupts sleep patterns and can promote all sorts of nasty things, from weight gain to depression.
CBD, however, doesn’t pose the same set of issues. While research is ongoing into the benefits of CBD, the anecdotal evidence is everywhere. Athletes use CBD to reduce muscle soreness and pre-game jitters, others have found it leaves them feeling more calm, and people like me use it as part of a larger self-care regimen.
As if all that weren’t enough, CBD doesn’t bring me down or disrupt my mood like a night of too much wine does. It doesn’t lead me straight into a pint of Ben and Jerry’s or make me weepy or overly-emotional. In my experience, it’s a better way to do self-care than even light drinking, and it certainly makes me feel better the next day.
The Popularity of CBD
CBD has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for a good reason. In addition to the sweeping anecdotal benefits, there’s also the consumption method to consider. Taking CBD is pleasant. Whether you decide to interact with CBD through an oil, a tincture, or a salve, you’ll find that these formulas are easy to use, easy to apply, and easy to ingest. CBD oil, in most cases, has a light, pleasant taste, and is the perfect addition to a beverage. There are also CBD teas, edibles, capsules, and more - all of which are available to consumers depending on preference and priority.
Today, I don’t miss my nightly glass of wine. In my opinion, replacing it with CBD tinctures and CBD oil has been a big step for my self-care. Not only do I feel better, but I enjoy the clarity doing away with that bit of drinking affords me. It’s nice not to have to tune out to settle in.
