The Types of CBD: What you Need to Know

CBD: it's blown up in recent years, but what's making it so popular? By now, you probably know that CBD is an effective supplement for people looking to ease the stress of daily life or stay more focused throughout the workday. You might even know that some people use it to enhance athletic performance. But what about CBD as an everyday wellness supplement? How does adding it into your routine support your mood, quiet your mind, and allow you to wake up refreshed?

Here's what you need to know.

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol. It's a compound that occurs naturally in the cannabis plant. Today, scientists estimate that there are more than one hundred cannabidiols, including THC. Unlike THC, however, CBD has no psychoactive properties, which means it won't make users "high."

CBD oil, specifically, has found its way into a wide assortment of products, including topical creams, CBD muscle rub , and lotions designed to ease your pain and soothe your joints. CBD tinctures and drops are also popular and are ideal for anyone who wants rapid absorption immediate impact.

While CBD seems to have hit the market in recent years, it's an ancient supplement. Conservative estimates report that people have been using the extract since about 6,000 B.C.E.

The 3 Types of  CBD: Full-Spectrum CBD, Broad-Spectrum, and Isolates

One of the first things you'll notice when you start shopping for CBD oils is that there are three primary varieties: broad- and full-spectrum CBD oils and isolates.

Here's the difference between the three:

Broad-Spectrum CBD Oils

Broad-spectrum CBD oils maintain the full profile of beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes present in the cannabis plant. Broad-spectrum CBD is a middle-ground between isolates and full-spectrum CBD. While it goes through virtually the same extraction process as a full-spectrum oil, it's also subject to an additional refinement process designed to strip the oil of all THC compounds.

This is precisely what many people like about broad-spectrum oils: there are no traces of THC in the extract itself, so there's no chance consumers will feel "high." Here at Plant IQ Organics, we use broad-spectrum CBD oil in all of our products.

Full-Spectrum CBD Oil

Sometimes called "whole-plant CBD," full-spectrum CBD oil contains high levels of cannabinoids and terpenes. Because full-spectrum CBD oils maintain the natural balance of terpenes and cannabinoids, they offer a broader scope of health benefits than isolate products. They also feature trace amounts of THC, although the levels are not enough to get users "high."

CBD Isolates

CBD is one compound, which can be isolated and purified, and isolates do precisely that. Pure CBD oil is a CBD isolate, for example. CBD isolate can be added to food or beverages, or consumed directly.

To produce a CBD isolate, manufacturers extract CBD from the rest of the cannabis plant's compounds. The to-be-isolate then goes through what manufacturers call a winterization process, which gets rid of remaining terpenes, waxes, and cannabinoids. This creates a product that is as much as 99% pure CBD.

CBD isolates are a popular choice among people who want to ensure they're avoiding even trace amounts of THC. While it's unlikely that someone consuming full-spectrum CBD  oil would test positive for THC on a drug test, CBD isolate remains the safest choice for anyone whose top priority is passing a drug test.
